I have watched players step onto the pitch after three days of continuous travel, and the difference in processing speed is undeniable. Chess is the same. This schedule is forcing players into a choice: give everything to the club tournament, or save energy for the Olympiad. The blind spot is that we tend to look only at the participation list to assess a tournament's strength. But in a season that already has a next destination just two days away, the participation list does not reflect the true level of competition. There will be games affected by the strategic caution of players – those who may choose safe play to preserve energy. Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa may have made a wise choice by staying out of this tournament. Their absence not only reduces the event's appeal but also signals that top young players are prioritizing the Olympiad. This raises questions about the long-term attractiveness of the franchise league model, when it must compete directly with traditional events on the international calendar. The empty pitch turned out to be the truest mirror of modern football. In chess, that mirror is the schedule. Global Chess League 2026 has an attractive prize fund, quality star power, and a well-invested live streaming platform. But if the organizers do not solve the scheduling conflict with the Olympiad, the tournament will pay the price in the technical quality of its games.
